What matters before you call
- Match the specialist to the jobUse an auto locksmith for vehicle keys, a safe specialist for safe work and a locksmith experienced with multipoint mechanisms for uPVC doors.
- Check how the service reaches youA mobile locksmith comes to the job. A shop or workshop may also accept key cutting and planned visits at its premises.
- Use the rating as one signalLook at the number of ratings, the types of jobs customers describe and any repeated concerns—not the star number alone.
- Confirm the whole priceAsk for call-out, labour, VAT, parts and any out-of-hours charge before the locksmith sets off.
- Agree the method and partsFor entry work, ask what will be tried before drilling. For replacement work, confirm the exact lock and included keys.
Membership and qualifications
Understand what a badge means
The UK does not have a government locksmith licence. Memberships and qualifications can add context, but they do not replace a clear scope and price.
- Master Locksmiths AssociationMLA approval is a voluntary industry credential. Use the MLA directory to confirm a current claim.
- Training and manufacturer credentialsCheck what the qualification covers and whether it relates to your lock, door, safe or vehicle.
- InsuranceFor planned or higher-value work, ask what cover applies to the work being completed.
- Identity at the doorConfirm the attending business or locksmith name matches the person you spoke to and the details on the receipt.
If the situation is urgent
Safety comes first. Move to a safe place, give the exact postcode and ask for a live arrival estimate. Urgency should not stop you asking for a complete price.
